Calling All Nordic English Language Writers

The Nordic English Writing Awards (NEWA) is a writing competition open to all aspiring writers in the Nordic region. English language fluency is generally very high in these countries and this award seeks to find and promote new voices. NEWA is an opportunity for Nordic voices to be heard in the English language.

Who can enter?

Any resident of the Nordic Region* that does not use English as their native language can enter the awards.

*The Nordic Region consists of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland, as well as the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Åland.

What are the categories?

The Nordic English Writing Awards (NEWA) will reward writers in the genre of the Short Story. There is a category especially for students (who may be asked to prove they are in full-time education at the time of entry).

What are the prizes?

The prizes for the Nordic English Writing Awards (NEWA) are as follows:

1st place Winning Short Story - €250 cash prize (non-student category only).

The Winner will also receive a custom designed NEWA laurel and certificate.

1st place Winner of the Student Short Story will receive Mentoring from Award Winning Writer, NEWA Co-founder and Judge, Fergal O'Byrne. This mentoring will be four online one hour meetings with the winner, to develop the winning story. The Student Winner will also receive a custom designed laurel and certificate.

Each short-listed entry will receive a custom designed laurel.

Please Note: There is no cash prize in the Student Category.

How to Enter

  1. Read the Rules for full details of eligibility and judging criteria.

  2. Please Pay the entry fee. There is a discounted rate for Students.

  3. Once you have PAID the entry fee you will receive an email confirming your payment.

  4. This email will have an Order Number ( # followed by 4 or more digits).

  5. Simply click REPLY to that email and make sure you ATTACH your story.

  6. Click send and you are all done!

  7. Good luck! We look forward to reading your story.
